Global Democratic RevolutionA Global Democratic Revolution is coming - the creation of new democratic media, money and politcal systems that make the present (corporate captured) ones obsolete and demonstrably illegitimate. "We are at that very point in time when a 400-year-old age? is dying and another is struggling to be born - a shifting of culture, science, society, and institutions enourmously greater than the world has ever experienced. Ahead, the possibility of regeneration of individuality, liberty, community and ethics such as the world has never known, and a harmony with nature, with one another and with the divine intelligence such as the world has always dreamed" - DeeHock in Birth of the Chaordic Age "Something big is happening in the world today that very few people have picked up on, and even fewer seem to understand. Out there, way beyond the radar screens of the media and political classes, something is massing. Something bigger than most have yet realised; something that is beginning to look like a genuine, global revolution. Perhaps not a revolution in the sense that recent history has taught us to understand it: not a series of power grabs by red-starred guerrillas or 'Peoples' Parties'. But a revolution nonetheless; one which aims to turn existing power structures upside down; which is tens of millions strong; which began life in the poor world, and which only later arrived on the streets of the West." - OneNoManyYeses by PaulKingsnorth "SmartMobs emerge when communication and computing technologies amplify human talents for cooperation." - SmartMobs by HowardRhiengold? "There is an emerging second superpower, but it is not a nation. Instead, it is a new form of international player, constituted by the will of the people in a global social movement. The beautiful but deeply agitated face of this second superpower is the worldwide peace campaign, but the body of the movement is made up of millions of people concerned with a broad agenda that includes social development, environmentalism, health, and human rights. This movement has a surprisingly agile and muscular body of citizen activists who identify their interests with world society as a wholeand who recognize that at a fundamental level we are all one." - The SecondSuperpower Rears its Beautiful Head by James F. Moore, Berkman Center for Internet & Society "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete" - BuckminsterFuller ''"In the coming months it's going to be up to us all to awaken and spread the message that actual change is possible. We must reassert our collective humanity in order to survive. We should no longer accept the notion that, despite the fact that the fat cats keep getting fatter and our privatised services and utilities are collapsing under the strain, asylum seekers are somehow to blame for all society's ills. We need to stop wanking and start thinking. We need a democracy in this country, not fancy adverts on the TVs? in buses for crossing a box with a pencil every four years. Come on people, things don't have to be like this. So look, let's try and get out of debt, out of compulsory IDs? and the erosion of human rights, and into the joyous celebration of life that human existence is really about."'' Karen is indeed correct, my name is Josef (Davies-Coates) I am founder of the uniteddiversity Open Organisation ( http://udoo.org/ ) and one of the main organisers of WTF's The Future?! ( http://wtfcon.org/ ) I have lots of good links with autonomous spaces around London, and am quite heavily involved in the horizontially-led London Social Forum (LSF - http://www.londonsocialforum.org/ ) and ECF ( http://www.europeancreativeforum.org/ ). Recently, I have been getting more involved in Indymedia too (i.e. going to meetings, and arranging weekly screenings, starting 2moro at Vertigo Cinema - see http://udoo.org/events/ ) I believe that the many positive energies behind WTF, ECF, LSF, RTS (Reclaim the Streets) and EFCR (European Forum on Communication Rights) is going to make this summer and ESF ( http://www.esf2004.net/ ) in October a very fun and interesting time. With global implications. It is all part of the coming global democratic revolution (GDR) - the creation of new democratic media, money and politcal systems that make the present (corporate captured) ones obsolete and demonstrably illegitimate. Right now, as I write this e-mail, I'm trying to manifest at least two large-scale open space (see http://udoo.org/open_space/ ) forums taking place on the streets of London on July 4th and September 11th, as a collaborative effort between these (and numerous other) positive energies. It will be a demonstation of democracy (and of how a forum could/should really be done). The working name for the idea has so far been Pedipeace: Democracy at the crossroads (see http://udoo.org/pedipeace/ ). People will have all sorts of dialogues at crossroads around central London. The whole of Soho will be coverered with a open wireless "lake", and there will be Indymedia centres/coverage galore. Mobile phones and texts will be heavily used for co-ordination and organisation. A huge media spectacle will be created. The idea is to ask Londoners (and the world) what they think, and to use collaborative software to do it (e.g. http://www.vivarto.com/ ) Vivarto, for example, has 3 stages: 1. Proposal stage: people propose issues and rate by importance (this will largely happen before the demonstration). Those rated as most important (i.e. 3 out of 5 and above) --> 2. Debate Stage: people can put forward and debate proposals surrounding the selected issues, again rated by everyone. (this would take place both before and during the demo) Top rated proposals --> 3. Ballot stage: everyone can vote. People are encouraged to "Trust Yourself" (see the english site of DemoEX - Democracy Experiment - at http://www.demoex.net/eng/ ). If, on a particular issue, you don't feel informed enough to "Trust Yourself", then you can give your vote to a trusted friend or expert, whom can vote for you. If you have the time and inclination you can vote for everything, directly, yourself. This is very much like "Liquid Democracy" ( http://udoo.org/liquid_democracy/ ) Anyway, this is gonna be big. At ESF we will get people planning street forums simultaneously at city centres accross europe, and then at WSF, the world. This will help us redefine WSF as "World Street Festival" in the run-up to the G8 showdown in UK, 2005. Start spreading the meme, and acknowledge that even just the few people on the lists I've cc'd could quite easily make this happen. Together we have everything! Well, that's pretty much where I'm coming from. Be good to know a bit about everyone else too :) Bring it on, Josef. PS catch me (qopi) and others discussing these ideas live on the web at http://webirc.espnow.net/ (or via irc.freenode.net #esp) and join the uniteddiversity share list by sending an email to share@uniteddiversity.com with subscribe as the subject.
