Bio

- Born at home on April 1st 1978 in London, UK

- Lifelong veggie. I have never eaten meat or fish, but can't live without eggs, milk and cheese.

- I cycle everywhere I go. It is the cheapest, quickest, greenist and healthiest way to get around London.

Experience relevant to uniteddiversity and the Open Co-op

Founder of uniteddiversity

An open oraganisation seeking to to improve quality of life on earth whilst simultaneously reducing ecological footprint. Commons creation and community development through the sharing of resources and democractic self-organisation is the key.

Founder of the Open Co-operative

Former Trustee of the Chaordic Commons

Whose purpose is to design, disseminate and implement new concepts of organisation that result in more equitable sharing of power and wealth, improved health, and greater compatability with the human spirit and biosphere.

Worked at the New Economics Foundation

Including work with Time Banks UK, the London Time Bank Network (time based mutual credit systems designed to build a trusted support network in a local community), the Inner City 100 project (promoting the value and success of high growth business in deprived inner city areas), Plugging the Leaks (making the most of every pound that enters the local economy), and BizFizz (helping local people with good ideas turn them into a business)

Things I want to see and help make happen

We need to make sustainable living easy.

In my mind this is a matter of making sharing and self-organisation simple.

Once there is a critical mass of people living a high quality, low-impact lifestlye through effectively sharing and self-organising to provide for their own needs, other people will copy them/join in.

Make Sharing simple

Tools to enabling people to pool resource and create commons

Making Self-organisation simple

Tools to ceate open co-operative structures
  • Decision making
  • Currency and Exchange

It has to be attractive to those (including ourselves) currently stuck in and overly dependent on the existing failing systems of ownership, exchange and organisation.

Help organise funding and support for Free Software developers

This will assit and direct their efforts towards developing software to:
  • Create Your Own Community Currency
  • Make decisions democractically

These Tools would enable people to:
  • Create Open Co-operatives that provide the good and services needed and desired by their community.

Tour and demonstrate our ideas in the UK in 2005

Why UK? That is where I live and know best. Why 2005? There will be a very significant General Election and a meeting of the G8. I consider myself remarkably well placed to initiate such a tour, considering all the wonderful people I have the pleasure of knowing...

Some relevant interesting people that I know

(one of my core personal missions is to get all these people - since they are the people the I know - to share resources and assist each other to achieve their many shared goals)

Person/Project | Degree of Seperation | Explanation

Tom Salfield | 1 | Close friend and collegue

I met Tom while we were studying at LSE. He was the General Secretary of the Legalise Cannabis Society, and I was a the Treasurer. Tom has worked with me on numerous project, most notably uniteddiversity and the open co-operative. I think Tom and I have a very good shared understanding about "the complete system" that we are intending to co-create with the other people in this list.

Oliver Slyvester-Bradley | 1 | Good Friend and Collegue at Open Co-op

Francesca R Giordano | 1 | Friend and fellow networker/event organiser

Francesca compiled the Sustainable Society directory and initiated the Earth Emergency project. She is currently a Director of the World Future Counil. I'm not sure how we first met, but I bump into her at sustainability and democracy related events pretty often.

Gary Alexander | 1 | Friend and co-founder of the Open Co-op

I first met Gary at an monetary reform event @ LSE organised by Francesca in conjuction with Jane at Positive News. I met him again at another get together organised by Francesca, when we were both introduced to Mikael Nordfors. Gary later came to do a presentation of his ideas at WTF, a conference about creating the world we want co-organised by uniteddiversity. That led the further meetings and the formation of the Open Co-op.

John Jopling | 1 |

John Turnbull | 1 |

David Boyle | 1 | Former Collegue at nef

I met David when I worked at the New Economics Foundation (he is a senior associatie). He is editor of Radial Economics (nef's journal), co-founder of Time Banks UK and London Time Bank Network and author of Funny Money, The Money Changers, The Little Money Book, and numerous papers about community currency.

I met Greg at the 491 Gallery a sustainable community regeneration art project (SCRAP) in Leytonstone, London. He is a founder and director of The Art Organisation who seek to put disused properties to use and introduce art to the community. 491 Gallery is an example of one project.

Doug King-Smith | 1 | Good Friend

Doug has been central to the development and survival of the 491 Gallery project and wants to develop the SCRAP model of community and art based regeneration

Eleanor Day | 1 | Good Friend and collegue at green festival and events

I met Eleanor at the Camden Green Fair (organised by John Jopling, Groundwork and others). She was looking for and co-ordinating stewards for the Big Green Gathering (organised by Brig, Sam and others). Eleanor works for a regeneration funding body and is heavily involved in lots of green events and festivals.

Shane Hughes | 1 | Friend and Collegue at European Creative Forum

I met Shane whilst stewarding (at Eleanor's request) for an outdoor performance of Romeo and Juliet performed in Mudchute Park (Europe's largest urban farm). He has been central to the development of the European Creative Forum.

Robert Wade | 1 | Good friend and collegue at ECF

I met Rob through my involvement in the European Creative Forum. Rob is a very clever man and an excellent political musician (aka The Rub and MC Daylight). He is very active in the peace movement and his core campaigns are an end to fuel tax on plant oils, better democracy, an the public reclamation of media and money creation.

Rebecca Thomas | 1 | Good friend and collegue at ECF

Tanya | 1 | Friend
