uniteddiversity's 3rd Birthday @ 491 Gallery:

11-5pm: OpenSpace on Creating the World We Want

Here is a rough outline for the day (read openSpaceNotes taken on the day). We are trying to balance the self-organising chaos of pure OpenSpace sessions (of which there will be up to 18) with 3 general sessions on Building Commons, the War on Ignorance and using Social Software.

Each session will consist of a quick mapping exercise (who are we and who do we know?) followed by brainstorming and visioning (how can we co-create the world we want?)

  • Start and Casual Minglings (plus brunch for early arrivals :)
  • Opening Circle, Quick Introductions and Outline of the ud Open Organisation
  • OpenSpace Technology explanation, Session Creation and Sign-up
  • OpenSpace Session 1. (eg. 491 gallery, LARC, Social Centres etc.)
  • Building Commons: Land Trusts, Housing Co-ops, Self-build and WiFi Ecovillages
  • OpenSpace Session 2. (eg. Indymedia, Hacklab, Wireless etc.)
  • War On Ignorance: Alternative Media, Culture Jamming and Education
  • OpenSpace Session 3. (eg. Community Currencies, Open Organisation etc.)
  • Smart Mobs and Social Software: using collaborative tools for change
  • Closing Circle and Round-up.

We will document and release everything under Creative Commons Licenses.
Please bring a gift. It can be anything: a peanut, a book, whatever!

8pm-dawn: Roots4Life presents Kabaresque, a Magical Oriental Journey Awakin' all Senses...

  • Live Music across 3 rooms
  • Spoken Word, Persian Poety
  • Belly Dancers, Theatre Acts
  • Visuals, Cinema, Exhibitions

OpenSpace Networking Event: Planning --Bridget Peake, 2004/01/29 15:46 GMT
Some thoughts around the planning for this event:

As some of you know, I am co-founder of the Creating the World We Want (CtWWW) movement which has hosted events in London, Bath and Gloucester. The idea around these events has been to gather people together to share their vision of the world they want to create and together co-create projects that will bring this world into reality. The name ‘Creating the World We Want’ evokes a certain image of inspiration, participation, co-creation and action. And indeed those are the core values of the movement.

Looking at the United Diversity event and what you are hoping to create, is occurred to me that calling it a Creating the World We Want hosted by United Diversity and 491 might give more focus to the event. I’m not attached to this idea, just thought it might make a nice context for the day. What do you all think? BridgetsOriginalSchedule

Schedule:

We will need to create a focus question for the Open Space. For example: What is my role in creating the world we want? Or What can I offer towards building a sustainable community?

Materials/Supplies:

- flip-chart paper

- markers/pens

- A4 paper

- coffee/tea/biscuits (it’s a good idea to have this around during these things)

- name badges (stickers work)

- names for all the ‘spaces’ – it’s good to have a theme (i.e. animals, countries, etc.)

That’s about all I can think of at the moment. Thoughts, anyone?

P.S. This was my first attempt at Wiki — hope it works!

Bridget, I like your idea about calling this event a CtWWW event hosted by uniteddiversity (& 491).

maybe 2 sessions instead of 3? --josef, 2004/01/30 13:47 GMT
is half an hour enough? what do people think?

2 vs 3 --2004/01/30 23:06 GMT
As we calculated on Monday, we have about 6 spaces to play with (7 if we include the main room). That would allow for either 14 or 21 opportunities for people to share and create together. If people have an idea/question/project they want to share that will take more than 30 mins, they can always sign up for two slots. I think the more slots the better...

that was from Bridget... --2004/01/30 23:07 GMT
by the way.

Number of Sessions --mamading, 2004/01/31 00:29 GMT
I don't know anything about the Open Space process, but what Bridget said makes sense to me.

It was great meeting everyone, especially the mysterious and legendary tav! Lots of positive energy, ideas and information, plus interesting projects to explore and get involved with.

As for the party afterwards, you had to be there! ;-)
